On Not Dressing for Other People's Approval

There was a time when I cared way too much about whether people understood what I wore.
Was it too much? Did it match? Was I too old for it? Did it even make sense?
Now, I am looking at my style differently.
I do not believe your style is supposed to please the masses.
Some people are going to love what you wear. Some people are going to say it's not stylish enough. And that is perfectly fine, because I am not dressing for them.
The older I get, the more I realize how much freedom there is in not needing everybody to understand you. I can put on something because it makes me happy. That is enough.
Your style will never please the masses — and truth be told, it was never supposed to.
The right people will get it. The wrong people may call it ugly or say you're doing too much.
Let them.
You do not have to dress for other people's approval. And that's on every Funky Thang.

Out here being living proof that style has no rules.

The right people will get it. The wrong people will call it ugly. Either way, I'm walking in.
How I Styled This Look
Let me tell you what I had on.
Black eyelet long dress, flowy, feminine, a little gothic. I am wearing secondhand chunky layered pearl and gold necklaces stacked high. My go- to cat eye glasses. And on my arm a one of my handmade upcycled denim patchwork bags, heavy with funk, light on matching anything on purpose.
I was not going to a fashion show. I was running errands. Grocery store. Corner store. Just living. And I was fully, completely dressed for myself.
That is the whole point.

Grocery run in full funk. Let them stare.

You do not have to dress for other people's approval. Full stop.
The Bag (Because You're Going to Ask)
That denim bag I'm carrying in every photo? I made that. #realcreative
It's handmade from upcycled denim scraps and textures, raw edges and all. No two are alike because no two pieces of denim are alike. It's heavy enough to feel substantial, roomy enough to carry your whole life, and bold enough to be the statement when everything else is chaotic.
It's not for everyone. It's for you and, if you're the kind of person who just read this whole post and felt something.

So, best friend... you already know what time it is.

Walking out the same way I walked in on my own terms.
Wear What The Funk You Want.
