They Funky! Yanick Rockett Takes Her Ugly Denim Bag to Japan

Fashion has always been a way to tell a story without saying a word, and for Yanick Rockett, it’s one of her favorite forms of self-expression. When she ordered an Ugly Denim Bag for her trip to Japan, she brought her own sense of style to something I created, and seeing these photos of her wearing it has been such a pleasure.

Yanick shared a little about what fashion means to her:

“I never have too much to say with words but fashion has always been one of my favorite ways to express myself. I’ve always been a little different or ‘weird’, but why blend in when you can blend out is what I try to live by.”

Looking through her pictures, those words feel right at home. Whether she’s wearing a flowing black dress with fishnets and boots or pairing the bag with a simple black outfit, her style gives the layers of denim a different feeling in every photo. I love seeing the same bag become part of several looks while still feeling so naturally hers.

Then there’s the photo from Japan, with Yanick standing among the colorful signs and busy streets, her bag right there with her. When I’m working on a piece, I know the denim, the details, and the time that went into making it, but I don’t yet know where it will go or how someone will make it their own. Getting to see that part of its story is one of the things I enjoy most about creating.

That’s what I want to celebrate through They Funky! The bag is a connection, but the person wearing it brings something I could never add myself. Their personality, their way of putting things together, and their willingness to wear what feels like them become part of the story.

I keep coming back to Yanick’s words about blending out. There’s something refreshing about making room for your own taste rather than feeling like you have to dress the way everyone else does. Her photos capture that beautifully, and I’m grateful she shared both her style and a little of herself with us.

Thank you, Yanick, for choosing one of my Ugly Denim Bags to take along to Japan and for letting me share this part of your journey here. It means a lot to see something made by my hands become part of someone else’s life. Your support means more than you will ever know.
