Funky Note From The Creator!

Tangie Bell wearing In My Season Dress Telling her Style Story

Hey Friend! I'm Tangie Bell, a 50-something Black woman, designer of one-of-a-kind ugly denim bags, motivational journal dresses, and creator of a space where we toss style rules out the window.

I didn’t always feel like I could embrace my true style. There was a time when I doubted myself, tried to fit into molds that weren’t mine, and let other people’s opinions define what I should wear. Most people couldn’t relate to me dressing in gothic grunge, so I switched to Funky Grunge. That was my way of making what I love fit me. But here’s the thing: when you hit your 50s, something magical happens. You start to let go of all that noise. You start to realize you don’t need anyone’s permission to be who you are, and that’s where the fun begins.

I started Funky Grunge Boutique to celebrate individuality, creativity, and confidence. Every bag I design, every dress I design, and every message I share is rooted in my personal journey—one that’s all about breaking the rules and creating your own path. My denim bags, for example, are called "ugly" in the most loving, rebellious way possible. They represent all those times I was told I didn’t fit in and called ugly on the internet because my bags were just created to look different. These bags are more than accessories—they’re a statement, a conversation starter, and a reminder that there’s no such thing as “too much” when you’re being authentically you.

In addition to my funky bags, I’ve launched a collection of motivational journal dresses. These dresses are designed to inspire and empower you every time you put them on. As I’ve embraced my own self-love and style over the years, I’ve found that clothing can be so much more than something you wear—it can be a message, a reminder to stay true to yourself, and to chase your dreams no matter your age.

And that’s where the Wear What The Funk You Want Movement comes in. It’s a space for anyone who’s tired of society’s “rules” when it comes to fashion, aging, and self-expression. At 53, I’m leading this movement with a mission to encourage people—especially black women—to wear what makes them feel free, confident, and unapologetically themselves. No more hiding, no more feeling like we have to shrink to fit in. It’s time to break the mold and wear what the funk we want! It’s time to play and slay:)

Funky Grunge Boutique isn’t just about selling unique, funky unique things—it’s about building a community. That’s why I also run Funky Grunge Boutique Extra, an extension of the boutique where I get to share more of my personal journey. Through exclusive vlogs, blogs, interactive posts, and my podcast, I open up about the ups and downs of life in your 50s, how I stay inspired, and why I think we should all embrace our personal lifestyle for true happiness. It’s the place to connect with me on a deeper level and join a group of like-minded women who are ready to wear what the funk they want.

My journey hasn’t been easy, but it’s been so worth it. Every step of the way, I’ve learned that it’s not about pleasing others; it’s about being true to myself. And now, I want to pass that freedom along to you. Through my work and living in my full truth. Whether you're rocking one of my denim bags, slipping into a motivational dress, or just tuning in to my podcast, I want you to feel empowered to live life on your own terms.

If you’re ready to join the Wear What The Funk You Want Movement, embrace your unique style, and be part of a community of women who don’t play by the rules, you’re in the right place. Follow along for inspiration, empowerment, and all the funky things that come with living life unapologetically.

Welcome to Funky Grunge Boutique—where we break the rules, embrace our funk, and celebrate everything that makes us unique.
